Helping small business

Twenty small businesses have registered with the Third Avenue Village Association to participate in the fourth annual Small Business Saturday, which is held on Saturday, Nov. 30.

The shopping day was created by American Express to encourage consumers to shop at local businesses
Executive Director of Third Avenue Village Association in Chula Vista Luanne Hulsizer said Small Business Saturday adds another reason to shop.

“It provides consumers to have another special shopping day,” Hulsizer said.

Janet Goff, owner of My Cup of Tea, said she’s participated in the small business day in years past and has noticed an uptick in customers visiting her store at 242 Third Ave.

Goff is offering 10 percent off  on non-tea items.

Goff said she would like the city of Chula Vista to do a little more to bring in more shoppers to Third Avenue on this day.

“I just wish our city would be more considerate to it,” she said.

Felipe Canedo, owner of Eazy Toyz, said he supports the shopping day, but he said he knows that American Express wants business too.

“American Express is helping us with all the marketing and promotion, but it helps them too,”  he said. “You don’t think that American Express wants you to swipe their card while you purchase something at a local store?”
