Xolos remain undefeated in Copa Carlos Flores | Thu, Mar 07 2013 09:05 AM

The Tijuana Xolos made history again Wednesday, hosting and defeating current Copa Libertadores champion Corinthians of Brazil, 1-0.

From the initial whistle, the Xolos' game plan seemed to be to overwhelm Corinthians with a relentless attack that almost culminated in a quick goal in the first minute. Both Alfredo Moreno and Fidel Martinez  missed from less than 12 yards.

Corinthian players appeared to be spend the first moments of the game becoming familiar with the artificial turf while the Xolos demonstrated their mastery of the unnatural playing service by playing the ball at will.

But Corinthians finally found their footing beginning in the 9th minute when they started to display some of the characteristic Brazilian, quick touch soccer. The Brazilians scored in about the 12th and 15th minutes but Peruvian referee Victor Hugo Carrillo called both goals back for offside.

At the second half, the best chance for Corinthians came at the feet of Pablo Guerrero who adeptly avoided three Xolos defenders and sent the ball toward the net with his left foot, only to have goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo make a last minute save to keep the score even at zero.

The only goal of the game came at the 64th minute when Javier Gandolfi back heeled the ball past goalkeeper Cassio and into the Corinthians net.

The Xoloitzcuintles entered yesterday’s game at the head of Group 5, after defeating Millonarios of Colombia 1-0 and dismantling San Jose of Oruro by a score of 4-0. They remain at the top of their division with nine points and are almost assured to continue on to the next round of the international club tournament.
