The benefits of assisted living Jenny Wallis | Sat, Jan 05 2013 12:00 PM

Dear Jenny,
After seeing my aunt home for the holidays I thought that maybe it would be better for her to move to a community where she can keep living her life.  She seems so lonely and our family just isn’t enough anymore.  Are senior communities really a benefit?

There are many different advantages of assisted living communities.  One of the key advantages is the sense of community it can introduce into an individual’s life.  Residents are surrounded by members of their peer group; they also have access to social activities, that is a large benefit.  The different activities can include games, time outdoors, even movie nights.   Connecting with others whether they are dealing with some of the same health or psychological issues can also aid in an assisted living resident’s general happiness.  Sometimes a resident may not want to participate in any of the goings on in the community, but just watching it happen around them is enough social interaction.
Many different assisted living communities also offer the benefit of transportation. Driving can be a dangerous activity for some elderly individuals, but it may also be necessary to get to doctor appointments, grocery stores and social events. That is why it is so convenient when communities provide transportation.  It is both a safe and reliable convenience to have transportation offered.  It also removes the need to serve as chauffeur from the family members.
Health is also a large reason and factor in assisted living.   Besides providing an on-site nurse and care givers who are in the community 24 hours a day, residents can take advantage of regular nutritious meals, even exercise classes. Being in the Assisted living environment can be more beneficial to residents taking steps to improve their own health.
Another great advantage is the sanitation of the residents and their environment. Not only is it about housekeeping and maintenance, but also personal grooming. Most assisted living communities employ maintenance staff, even gardeners to handle repairs and outdoor work while still offering residents an opportunity to work outdoors and tend gardens in a safe, controlled environment.
That is also true of personal hygiene residents are able to perform tasks with which they feel comfortable, but assistance is offered when they find themselves unable to maintain their preferred level of grooming.
