Suspect already did his time

Abraham Lopez, 27, of Chula Vista, was sentenced June 6 to 32 days he has already spent in jail after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner.

Lopez is a veteran and Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle referred him to Veterans court in San Diego for further review on June 28. He is expected to be placed on probation and remains free on bond.

No one was injured in the Feb. 8 incident when a caller warned police that Lopez was possibly suicidal and might drive while intoxicated. The caller also said Lopez had access to guns.

A SWAT team showed up at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Third Avenue and they heard several gunshots. Witnesses said Lopez shot a handgun into the air and went back into his apartment.

Around midnight, the SWAT and crisis negotiation team approached the apartment and Lopez was arrested without incident. Traffic had been closed for several hours on Third Avenue.
