Despite losing at home last Friday, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente will play in the LIGA Bancomber MX playoffs Thursday.
The team faced their biggest rival Club Leon FC at home and could not manage to score on their opponent until the final minutes of the game. Even then theywere defeated 1-2.
The Xolos had plenty of opportunities to score before their opponents took the lead but their offense continued to be ineffective.
In the early minutes of the game midfielder Fernando Arce and forward Jaime Ayovi had occasions to get Tijuana on the board but both missed their chance.
Leon began pressuring the Xolos and in the 15th minute Sebastian Maz sent a shot past goalkeeper Adrian Zermeño who was unable to protect his net.
With Leon in control of the midfield Tijuana continued attacking however, they were more cautious about stopping Leon than sending their offense. The first half ended 0-1.
In the second half Luis Montes scored Leon's second and final goal when he sent an imposing shot from outside the box that easily passed Zermeño.
Xolos' Cristian Pellerano scored in the 80th minute and forward Dario Benedetto had a final chance in the last minutes but his strike hit the post to add more agony in this defeat.
The disappointment of a home loss, however, was short lived as the Xolos were able to cling to their 7th place position over the weekend, thanks to the three teams behind them failing to acquire enough season points to advance.
The Xolos will play Club Deportivo Toluca Thursday at home in the first leg of the home-home quaterfinal.
