Small Business Day sidelined on Third

Small Business Saturday is going out of business on Third Avenue on Nov. 28.

“The last few years we’ve tried to engage our businesses, but it just wasn’t something that ramped up to be successful,” said Luanne Hulsizer, executive director for the Third Avenue Village Association.

Hulsizer said the association now turns its focus on the popular Holiday In The Village on Dec. 5.

Small Business Saturday is an unofficial shopping holiday sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. American Express nationally promotes the shopping day.

The news of TAVA no longer promoting Small Business Saturday did not sit well with at least one business owner.

“That’s their job to promote (small) businesses,” said Felipe Lopez, owner of the sports novelty shop Eazy Toyz. “And my business, like many on Third Avenue, is a small business.”

Lopez admits that his business has struggled financially throughout the years and said anytime of promotion would help his business.

Lopez took it upon himself to register his business for Small Business Saturday with American Express,

“I think there are some people that are faithful and are all for shopping small,” he said. “We don’t have the benefit of Black Friday, so Small Business Saturday was created for businesses like mine.”
