Regatta pays tribute to deceased loved ones

More than 1,400 pennants, referred to as “spirits in the wind,”  adorned 40 yachts sailing in San Diego Bay Aug. 27 for the 14th annual “Celebrating Life” regatta to benefit Sharp HospiceCare.

The fundraising sailing race celebrated the extraordinary level of care that Sharp HospiceCare brings to end-of-life patients, their families and friends.

More than 1,000 people participated in this two-day event that included a pre-race dinner, dancing, live entertainment and live and silent auctions on Aug. 26th; and the regatta race itself, spectator-boat viewing parties and post-race dinner party Aug. 27th.

For the last 14 years white flags bearing names and sentiments for deceasd loved ones, were flown from the riggings of sailboats and at the Coronado Yacht Club, as a way to memorialize them. The names and messages on the pennants are handwritten by hospice staff and volunteers, who receive the messages from families who have used Sharp’s hospice and bereavement services, as well as regatta supporters.
