Nearly $2 million later South Bay YMCA doors reopen

After a three-month closure because of renovations, the South Bay Family YMCA is re-opening its doors on Tuesday, April 5, with a ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. and opening to the public at noon. Local dignitaries, YMCA executives and board members will be on hand to cut the ribbon and reopen the center.

The South Bay Family YMCA has been a vital part of the South Bay since 1998, strengthening the community with sports and recreation and health and wellness.

The South Bay Family YMCA’s $1.8 million renovation is the center’s first of its kind and features a new layout to the lobby, an expanded wellness center and a new multi-purpose room.

Regional Marketing and Communications Director Tina Medina said YMCA members will enjoy the upgrades made to the center at 820 Paseo Ranchero in Rancho del Rey.

“They will be able to utilize all of the state of the art fitness equipment, they will be experiencing a beautiful new refinished pool, brand new locker rooms,” she said.

“We’ve added a family locker room and gaming room, which we did not have before, to better serve families in our community.”

The renovations were spurred by community feedback in recent surveys. Renovations began Jan. 4.

The renovations start at the lobby where guests will be greeted by a soft seating area and an all new welcome center design which will provide ease and flow for members, Medina said.

Locker room upgrades include all new locker fixtures, showers and amenities. A newly installed family locker room has private changing rooms.

The aquatics area also received upgrades to the lap and activity pools including new deck surfacing, tile and surrounding areas which now include outdoor seating and the feature home of a splash pad, which will open this summer. The splash pad was made possible by a donation.

One of the center’s newest highlights is its multi-purpose room. The room will be named after South Bay resident and philanthropist June Kemler.

The multi-purpose room provides an opportunity for gatherings plus new and improved classes.

As part of its opening celebrations, the South Bay Family YMCA’s events will be free to the community from April 5-9.

This includes use of group exercise classes, fitness equipment demonstrations and a family night.
Medina said the South Bay Family YMCA through its various programs serves about 50,000 people each year.
