Man mentally unfit for murder trial

A judge Monday committed a Chula Vista man who is charged with killing his grandmother and uncle to a state mental hospital after finding he was mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Raymond Joseph Chatterfield, 29, will be transferred to Patton State Hospital where he will receive treatment and psychiatric medications to try and restore his mental competency. The criminal proceedings remain suspended in the Nov. 30, 2015 deaths of Donna Chatterfield, 78, and Kenneth Chatterfield, 54, in his grandmother’s mobile home.

Chatterfield has not even been arraigned yet as his attorney said he did not mentally understand court proceedings. San Diego Superior Court Judge Steven Stone made the commitment for three years and it will be reviewed in 2019.
Chatterfield won’t be released unless there is another judicial review. He was arrested at a fast food restaurant on 30th Street after the bodies of both victims were found in the mobile home in the 1000 block of Beyer Way in Otay Mesa.

San Diego Police responded to a 911 call at 3:55 p.m. and found both victims lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics declared them both deceased at the scene. The attorneys have not discussed the facts of the case in court. He’ll be returned to Chula Vista Superior Court for trial if doctors and a judge determine he is mentally competent.
