District tutor admits to sex with student

A tutor who formerly worked for an agency that contracted with the Sweetwater Union High School District has pleaded guilty to a sex charge, which marks the third guilty plea among the same high school workers.
Alejandro Rodriguez, 20, will be sentenced Oct. 11 in Chula Vista Superior Court, which is the same sentencing date and the same courtroom as Edward Aaron Mendoza, 27, who was involved with another student at Mar Vista High School.

Rodriguez pleaded guilty to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a male student who was 16 years old, said Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger. She said he faces up to three years in jail.

Matzger said her office will not be seeking for Rodriguez to register as a sex offender for the February offense. She said it would be up to the judge to decide whether Rodriguez should register.

Rodriguez was the first person arrested on March 9 and the only one of the three charged in unrelated prosecutions who took his case to a preliminary hearing. He remains free on bond.

Mendoza will be required to register as a sex offender for life. Mendoza pleaded guilty to committing three counts of lewd acts with a 9th-grade girl, and to encouraging her to send him a photo of a genital area.

A judge dismissed 16 other counts against Mendoza and he faces a maximum term of five years in prison. Mendoza was a former football coach for Mar Vista High and he remains in the South Bay Detention Facility without bail.
Martin Gallegos, 48, a former substitute teacher and also an ROTC instructor, will be sentenced on Sept. 23 by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sontag.

Matzger said that Gallegos faces up to three years in jail and will likely be placed on probation. He is free on bond.
