December stabbing gets March prelim

A March 14 preliminary hearing was set Friday for a National City man accused of fatally stabbing his wife on Dec. 29, 2015.

Jose Hernandez Cruz, 43, waived his right to have a speedy hearing before a Chula Vista Superior Court judge. He has previously pleaded not guilty to killing Angelica Vargas Hernandez, 38.

Someone called National City Police at 10:13 p.m. Dec. 29 to report a domestic violence incident at a home in the 2500 block of I Street. Officers found Angelica Hernandez had been stabbed in the chest.

She was non-responsive and paramedics declared her dead at the scene. Based on statements Cruz made at the scene, police arrested him.

The couple’s children were not present at the time.

He remains in the central jail on $2 million bail.
