April sentencing in fraud case

A Chula Vista man will be sentenced April 15 after a federal jury found him guilty of nine counts of mail and wire fraud that stemmed from false statements he made about being injured to obtain federal employee’s compensation.

The jury also convicted LeRay Shurn, 59, of five counts of making false statements to the U.S. Navy and Department of Veterans Affairs that back or knee injuries prevented him from working as a Navy civilian employee.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Shurn defrauded the Navy of $400,000 by causing them to issue workers’ compensation and disability benefits to which he was not entitled.
