Accused goes back to psych facility

Raymond Joseph Chatterfield, 30, of Chula Vista, has been re-committed to Patton State Hospital after a judge again has found him mentally incompetent for trial in the slayings of his grandmother and uncle in 2015.

Chatterfield was earlier committed to the state psychiatric hospital, and San Diego Superior Court Judge Steven Stone again found him not able to mentally understand court proceedings. He will receive treatment and psychiatric medications to restore his mental competency.

Criminal proceedings remain suspended in the Nov. 30, 2015 stabbing deaths of Donna Chatterfield, 78, and Kenneth Chatterfield, 54, in his grandmother’s mobile home in the 1000 block of Beyer Way in Otay Mesa.

Chatterfield has not even been arraigned yet as his attorney maintained he did not understand court proceedings. A mental competency trial had been set last month, but a doctor’s report was received into evidence and the attorney agreed to another hearing without a trial.

Chatterfield won’t be released unless there is another judicial review. He was arrested at a fast food restaurant on 30th Street on Nov. 30 Chatterfield remains in the central jail without bail as of Sunday, but he is expected to be transferred to Patton.
