20-somethings sentenced for sex with teens

A 21-year-old South Bay tutor who pleaded guilty to having sex with a 16-year-old male student was sentenced Jan. 3 to two weeks in jail and five weeks house arrest.

Alejandro Rodriguez was handcuffed and taken into custody after appearing before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle, who placed him on three years probation.

Rodriguez, who was 20 years old when he had sex with the teen-ager, pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

“If I could go back, if there was a way I could think then clearly, I would definitely without thinking twice not have engaged (in sex),” said Rodriguez to the judge.

Rodriguez worked for an agency contracted with the Sweetwater Union High School District. Rodriguez was one of three people who pleaded guilty to having sex with students under 18 at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach.

“He will be in jail for two weeks, but then he will be released with an ankle monitor—basically on house arrest except for his time going to school, so it will be an 180-day custodial sanction,” said Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger.
Rodriguez could have received three years in county jail. He was not ordered to register as a sex offender.

Edward Aaron Mendoza, 27, a former football coach at Mar Vista High who pleaded guilty to committing three counts of lewd acts with a 9th grade girl, was sentenced to five years in state prison on Nov. 9.

Martin Gallegos, 48, a former substitute teacher and an ROTC instructor, was sentenced Sept. 23 to one year in jail for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 12th-grade female. His expected release date is March 23.
