History

The Star-News is a name closely identified with the fastest growing area of San Diego County … the South Bay. It was formed in 1954 by the merger of the Chula Vista Star and the National City News, papers founded in 1918 and 1882 respectively.

The Star-News is well read, simultaneously loved and hated by leaders and politicians in the area. It consistently reels in numerous journalism awards from San Diego’s Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalism.

The Star-News is published every Friday and has a distribution of 33,500 newspapers delivered free to 22,500 homes. The balance is delivered to high-traffic bulk drop locations throughout the area. The Star-News covers the communities of Chula Vista, National City, Bonita, EastLake and Otay Ranch.

The Star-News is dedicated to providing these communities with the latest developments in the South Bay. Everything from city council meetings to high school sports are covered by reporters who are attuned to the needs of South Bay residents. Objectivity and fairness are the key words in describing this local coverage. However, The Star-News is not without opinions concerning issues that affect the quality of life of the citizenry; those opinions can be found on the editorial page in each issue of the paper. Hard-hitting commentary, letters to the editor and syndicated columns bring a variety of points of view so readers are able to form their own opinions about the important issues at hand.
