Ever since Ellen Browning Scripps first opened the doors to the Scripps Metabolic Clinic in 1924, caring for those with diabetes has been a primary mission of Scripps Health. Scripps is advancing that legacy with the opening of a new Scripps Diabetes Center location in San Diego’s South County.
“The Scripps Metabolic Clinic first opened its doors on Dec. 11, 1924, thus beginning almost a century of caring for San Diegans with diabetes. We have since expanded our diabetes services to 18 locations across San Diego County,” said Dr. Athena Philis-Tsimikas, corporate vice president, Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute. “This new location will provide people living with diabetes in Chula Vista and the surrounding communities the resources, knowledge and tools they need to make the best day-to-day decisions about their health and well-being.”
Located at 450 4th Street in Chula Vista and adjacent to the campus of Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista, the new Scripps Diabetes Center location offers:
•Peer-led diabetes skill-building groups
•An experienced health coach helps build and reinforce self-management skills. Open and free to the public. Groups are regularly held on:
•Spanish: Every Monday, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm
•English: Every Tuesday, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm
•Individual appointments for people with diabetes and gestational diabetes
•Certified Diabetes Educators provide information on self-management skills and home blood glucose monitoring. Education on associated cardiovascular risk factors and other complications is included.
•Group classes for Type 2 diabetes
•Nurses, dietitians and diabetes health care providers share their expertise and address topics related to managing diabetes. Individual questions are answered in an open discussion format. Program includes four core classes and one follow-up.
•Nutritional counseling, meal planning and exercise strategies for weight management
•Registered Dietitians offer patients a variety of medical, nutrition therapy services for the treatment/prevention of diabetes and other health conditions. Personal meal management, education and support are also provided to promote wellness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3 percent of the population—have diabetes. Of those, 18.8 million have been diagnosed, and 7 million have not yet been diagnosed.
