Paradise Valley Hospital was recognized for being one of 49 hospitals nationally to have the lowest proportion of serious medical errors per hospital discharge, according to Becker’s Infection Control & Clinical Quality.
The national average rate for ratio of serious complications to discharges is 0.81; Paradise Valley Hospital’s rate was 0.49. Paradise Valley was one of only two San Diego hospitals to be recognized nationally.
Numbers were calculated using the Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) 90 measure, a weighted average of the reliability-adjusted observed-to-expected ratios (indirect standardization of the smoothed rates) for several patient safety indicators. PSIs are a set of indicators used to provide information on hospital complications and adverse events following surgeries, procedures, and childbirth, used by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
The Hospital Compare data were gathered from July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2014, the most recent data available.
Alvarado Hospital also made the list with a rate of 0.43; both Alvarado and Paradise Valley are part of Prime Healthcare Services. Four Prime hospitals made the list of 49. Paradise Valley also is the recipient of Healthgrade’s Patient Safety Excellence Award for the last three years.
