South County CYT hatches family-friendly 'Honk!' Press Release | Fri, Apr 20 2012 12:29 PM

Audiences should prepare themselves to be taken on a hilarious musical journey in South County Christian Youth Theater’s upcoming production of “Honk!”

The tuneful, witty retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic children’s tale “The Ugly Duckling” will be staged at the Mater Dei Catholic High School theater April 27-29 and May 4-6.

After he is lured away from his home by the wily Cat, an odd-looking baby duck named Ugly goes on a quest to find his mother. With the help of new friends — including a comical troupe of geese and a lively bullfrog — Ugly’s journey home is not only an adventure, but also a celebration of being different.

The production is a fantastic family show for all ages.

All seats are reserved and ticket prices are $12 ($15 at the door) with special discounts available for groups of 30 or more. For tickets visit the Web site at www.cytsandiego.org.

Directed by Joshua and Amanda Pontsler, this brilliantly funny story is packed with puns, uplifting musical scores and larger than life characters. But more than just being a timeless tale, the Pontslers believe the play’s message is needed in a time when bullying continues to be an epidemic in schools and throughout communities.

“It is important that we bring you a show that portrays redemption, forgiveness and acceptance,” the directors said. “We only hope that through the magic of music and laughter, the power of bullying begins to wane.”

Show times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“Honk!” showcases the talents of more than 70 students in cast and crew.

Lead cast members include Landen Baldwin, 18, of Otay Ranch High School as Ugly; Jazmine Ruiz, 18, of Mater Dei High School as Ida; Jake Gardner, 16, of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts as Cat; and Daniel Collins, 17, of West Hills High School as Drake/Bullfrog.
