Ms. Alvarado, I have tried, in my own way, to pay it forward. Those of us who have journeyed thru our lives MUST find avenues to help those who have just begun their life's journey. If there is anything I can do to help 'Angel' anonymously, (I understand the constraints) - back pack, a pair of shoes, a jacket PLEASE ASK MR. MORENO FOR MY CONTACT INFO - the email I use here is not one I check - however Robert Moreno knows who I am.
Please know, the stories you share are important - it allows all of us in the 'village' of the So. Bay a glimpse into the lives of not only some struggling young students but the challenges of educators such as yourself.
THANK YOU FOR CARING SO VERY MUCH!!!!
Nancy Alvarado Says:
Thank you, anniej, for your kind comments, and for recognizing the complexity of educating children today.
In every single elementary school, probably in every classroom, there is at least one child who would benefit from an adult who comes in and listens to him/her read -- a quiet time with no strings attached, no judgment, no chance for failure, and some much-needed one-on-one time. Those moments save kids. I've poured a lot of that kind of time into "Angel", but volunteering anywhere (my class, my school, your neighborhood school) is more valuable than you know.
I lose a lot of sleep of a few students every year. I HAVE to keep in mind that so very much about their lives I can't change and have no control over, so I have to create the best 8 to 4 possible. I wouldn't know where to begin with the rest.
And this is one of the problems with this country - soooo many fail to truly understand the importance of teachers. In this day and age students are presenting with many many problems that they have no control over.
I was more than moved by the story of this young man and I am interested in helping - Ms. Alvarado, is there anything I can do to help insure 'Angel' does not become yet another statistic? While you are saving many each school year, perhaps I can do something to help young 'Angel'!
Maty Adato Says:
Why does Mr. McCann and his staff continually waste the time of reporters whining and crying foul. Maybe he and his staff should put more time and effort into their work and promises instead of this. Mr. McCann I believe promised no more tolls on the 125 and a business in Albersons among so many other empty promises just to get elected. What a waste of a council seat he is a disappointment yet again. He says a lot but does nothing and it looks like his staff is learning from him.
What more can be said? Just that the general public does not seem to give much credence to McCann's claims, or counter-claims.
He sure seems to get support from the judicial branch, however. Now there's a puzzle for one and all.
Bryan Felber Says:
Without commenting on this particular matter, Kevinbutthole above argues that because there is another allegation against a Republican that we need more Democrats in office. May I remind him/her that most of the Sweetwater District's trustees that were convicted were Democrats. Ben Hueso, sentenced for a charge of alcohol related reckless driving, is a Democrat. All of the San Diego City Council's 2005 convicted councilmen were Democrats. May I also point out that South Bay governance is dominated by Democrats, I believe all South Bay cities' councils, Southwestern College's Board of Trustees, etc.
Despite the dominance of convicted Democrats in San Diego governance, I overlook that and look at the individual. We've seen members of both parties convicted around the country. I don't think a political party is a determinant or predictor of legal or ethical behavior. That lies with the individuals.
Have your political party preference, but get your facts straight before unfairly broad-brushing other groups and reaching unreasonable conclusions based on incorrect facts.
Thank YOU for this inspirational story!
Republican camps like McCanns get made at informative information. We need more democrats to support informative stories like this. This is a good start, but continue the trend. Write stories about government employees that manipulate the benefits. For example, if a teacher continues to destroy the school bathrooms with his stench and other miscellaneous objects, write about it. If a teacher continues to have bad breath and his employees and students have to suffer and deal with it, write about it. Its not fair.
Chula Vista Tidbits Says:
If Ms. Martin truly wrote that letter, she is wasting her time as a part time staffer and should be a lawyer. McCann's camp complaining just shows a nerve has been hit. Considering McCann's past history, there is probably a lot more the taxpayers should know about what goes on in his office. Moreno wrote a good and informative article in his usually fair, balanced, and neutral style that should motivate us to demand more transparency from our elected and city government. A good place to start is with McCann.
Typical McCann rather than allow the initial Derrick Roach to die, he decided to have his staff member draft a rebuttal (at least it wasn't one of the boring 2 page bios parents were forced to listen to at football games). 'Star News must raise its standards', - oh contrar!
We are in the midst of elections, and even though Mayor Salas's term has 2 remaining years I would not be surprised to see McCann signs springing up all over our city soon.
While the 'McCann camp' envisions him as the next new Mayor the drums of the city are beating - the message not only NO, BUT HELL NO!!
A list is being made of all of the controversies in the past 10 years and while I have witnessed the majority of them, I have to tell you, even if I was a novice, reading the list would eliminate him from consideration.
TIME TO START LOOKING TO RETIRE FROM POLITICS - I understand FOX is looking for a new reality show and I have just the candidate!!!
First off I want to THANK Mr Moreno & TheStarNews for constantly reporting on our Local Government. We count on him and this newspaper to help keep our elected officials accountable.
Frankly if it weren't for the shady ways John has conducted business we wouldn't have the need to know we have now! Whether while holding office on OUR school district or bouncing back and forth on OUR city council, John McCann has raised many concerns. Self-serving and PREJUDICIAL are two terms that describe John's Legacy he's to leave us. The one word I associate with the StarNews Article Mr Moreno wrote is INVESTIGATIVE.
How about the fact that the StarNews even published this response article was TRANSPARENT & UNBIASED or their JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY was displayed! Ms Martin should try to spend some time teaching her boss these wonderful traits along with ETHICS. We'd all benefit from this!
I find it so typical politics when we see use of this tactic! Get Caught and Scrutinize The Messenger To Shift The Spotlight Away.
Let's focus on the claims of WE THE TAX PAYERS are paying for John to further his Political Career. Other fact to further investigate is the process in place that dealt with this & other claims of this sort that may come!
Let's move on term limits ASAP. Both at SUHSD & CVCC! I'm sure John will go to SWCC & then Sweetwater Authority when this happens......
Tabloid? Star News? C'mon man. Martin, that would be the SD Reader
