Mainly Mozart returns to Mater Dei Catholic's Kassebaum Theatre Phillip Brents | Sat, Oct 02 2010 11:16 PM

Music and dance take the stage when San Diego’s Performing Arts returns to Mater Dei Catholic High School this fall. Initiated in 2008 by Mainly Mozart, SDPA is a three-part sampler series held at the school’s Kassebaum Theatre. SDPA features hour-long performances by popular San Diego performing arts groups. Performances are scheduled between Oct. 9 and Dec. 4.

Mainly Mozart launches the series on Oct. 9 with Westwind Brass performing “And the World Resounds.” Back by popular demand, Westwind Brass will take the audience on a voyage through the music and cultures of Tunisia, Greece, Israel, France, South America, the USA, Canada, Armenia, Japan, China and other lands. This entertaining look at the world will include custom arrangements and idiosyncratic commentary.

The series continues Nov. 20 with award-winning Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Hailed as being unmatched in tonal magnitude, tuneful fluency and concentrated teamwork, Cuarteto Latinoamericano is known worldwide as the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. The group will perform a program of all-Mexican works in celebration of the Mexican bicentennial.

Mainly Mozart is working in collaboration with the consul general of Mexico to produce an event that will serve as the San Diego County centerpiece for the Nov. 20 anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Dignitaries and press from both sides of the border will be invited to this event, hosted by Mexican Consul General Remedios Gomez Arnau.

On Dec. 4, the series concludes with California Ballet performing excerpts from the holiday season favorite “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky. Set in a kingdom of candies and spices, the production has been praised for its striking, elegant and beautiful production values.

“We are thrilled by the positive reception the series has received and with our wonderful partnership with Mater Dei,” Mainly Mozart Executive Director Nancy Laturno Bojanic said. “We feel this series is the perfect way to introduce the arts in an accessible, family friendly way.”

Each San Diego’s Performing Arts performance begins at 7 p.m., followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session and an hour-long reception with the artists in the theater lobby.

Four hundred tickets are donated to children/families in need, and all tickets are accessibly priced. Single tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for students/faculty. A subscription for all three performances is $50 for adults and $12 for students/faculty. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mainlymozart.org, over the phone at 239-0100, or at the Mater Dei Catholic High School administration office.

San Diego’s Performing Arts is made possible in part by a grant through the city of Chula Vista and the Chula Vista Performing and Visual Arts grant.
