A rip-roaring canteen show is to be had Phillip Brents | Thu, Jun 16 2011 02:20 PM

War may be hell, but at the Swingtime Canteen, it’s still a lot of fun as envisioned by OnStage Playhouse’s current production of the same name.

A nostalgic 1940s musical treat, “Swingtime Canteen” is directed by Brett Daniels and produced by Luc R. Pelletier. Rick Shaffer serves as the musical director while choreography is handled by Chrissy Burns and set and light design by Chad Oakley.

Performances are ongoing through June 25 at OnStage’s downtown Chula Vista theater.
In 1944, after 17 years with MGM, still-glamorous movie legend Marian Ames has endured four flop films in a row and is being put out to pasture.  But there’s a war on and there’s no time for self- pity.

So Ames gathers up her gal pals from the Hollywood Canteen and heads for London to entertain the troops.  Laughs, tears, emotional fireworks, air raids and a celebration of women during the war punctuate this hilarious and heart warming story as these talented gals prove their mettle while they perform World War II classic songs.

The cast includes Kat Fitzpatrick, Hannah M. James, Janell McCuiston and Jessica Stamper.
Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. An added matinee will take place on June 18 at 2 p.m.

OnStage Playhouse is located at 291 Third Ave., Chula Vista. For more information, call 422-7787 or visit the Web site at www.onstageplayhouse.org.
