Drunk driver guilty of manslaughter

A Chula Vista man pleaded guilty April 20 to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated when he left his Jeep abandoned on a freeway in which a motorist was killed when he crashed into it.

Gregory Scott, 40, was killed June 17, 2017, at 2:50 a.m. after crashing into the Jeep owned by David Armando Olvera, 30, who crashed his vehicle and left it in the fast lane of Interstate 15.

Scott was driving home to his family in Spring Valley following a late night hockey practice.
Olvera, of Chula Vista, also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. San Diego Superior Court Judge Timothy Walsh set sentencing for May 17.

Olvera is expected to get a 6-year prison term, said Deputy District Attorney Andrew Aguilar. Olvera remains in jail on $1 million bail.

The blood/alcohol level of Olvera was registered at .21 several hours after the crash, said Aguilar. He had two misdemeanor convictions for drunk driving in 2007 and 2009.

Olvera crashed his Jeep at the center median on Interstate 15 just north of Friars Road. He left the vehicle in two freeway lanes. He later said he went into a wooded area and fell asleep, according to previous testimony.

Scott was the first motorist which hit Olvera’s Jeep, but three other drivers also struck the vehicles. Another motorist suffered a concussion.

Olvera initially claimed that a bearded man he met at a bar was the actual driver, but he didn’t know his name or know how he could be located.
Olvera left his brown flip flops in the driver’s compartment and walked barefoot to his parents’ home which was about a mile away.
