Make SCORE Baja Burgers & Beer your official culinary pit stop on the west side of Chula Vista.

The eatery, located at 860 Broadway, recently underwent a name change (formerly Bullseye) but has been in business at the same location and under the same ownership for two decades. In fact, the tasty burger joint is set to celebrate its 21st anniversary in February under owner Fran Muncey.

The name change highlights the restaurant as the official headquarters for SCORE International Off-Road Racing, which Muncey’s son, Roger Norman, recently purchased.

Norman won the fabled Baja 1000 race in 2001 and 2008.

“We wanted to have the official SCORE restaurant,” Muncey said. “We redid the interior with a brick ceiling, granite countertops, a wood floor and tables from the Caliente race track. The tables are a work of art, actually.”

If you are an off-road aficionado, then SCORE Baja Burgers & Beer will whet your appetite. TV monitors have at least two SCORE races on view at any time of the day along with other sporting events.

The establishment has six flat screen monitors to provide viewing pleasure. The “Dirt Live Off-Road Racing Show,” for instance, is available for viewing every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. at the restaurant.

Even if off-road racing isn’t your cup of tea, there’s still plenty to savor here. While the name may be new, the menu is the same — with lower prices.

All burgers come with fries, and the usual tray of condiments to customize the order: yellow peppers, pickles, red onion slices, relish, mustard, Tabasco sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise and the house secret sauce.

“We’ve changed the name but have the same great burgers and secret sauce,” Muncey said. “We have the same tray and table service — people like to know they can still build their own burger.”

Besides the tastiest burgers in town (the meat served is never frozen), the restaurant also offers fish (hand battered) and chicken to accommodate those meat-lovers who desire something lighter than beef, as well as salads, wraps, fish/shrimp tacos and chili cheese dogs.

The Trophy Truck X-treme one-pound burger ranks among the most popular menu items, according to Muncey. The USDA choice Angus burger comes with the works, and it’s a mouthful.

“I think a lot of people want to show how tough they are,” Muncey said with a smile.

At $10.99, it’s a steal — essentially what amounts to two cheeseburgers and fries for about half the cost.

For those whose appetites are less ambitious, there is the Juicy Lucy burger — a half-pounder at $8.99 that oozes melted cheddar cheese from the inside.

“We call it our inside out burger,” Muncey said. “It’s messy but delicious.”

Burgers come in half-pound and third-pound orders. Prices rang from $6.99 to $11.99.

The Baja 1000 is the classic cheeseburger while the ChupaCabra is smothered in chili beans, cheese and onions — the classic chili size. The Scorpion Bay Jalapeno Jack provides a twist on the standard American cheeseburger with south of the border appeal.

There’s something for vegetarians as well. The house specialty “lo-octane” burger features a veggie patty with cheese, lettuce and tomato.

Wheat buns are available upon request.

“We try not to say no to anyone,” Muncey said.
