Chinese cuisine is diverse. Szechuan. Cantonese. Anhui. Fujian. Hunan. Jiangsu. Shandong. Zhejiang.

Styles and tastes vary by class, region and ethnic background.

Wherever Chinese people live, even outside their homeland, they bring a taste of China with them.
The owners of the newly opened iWok restaurant in Bonita Point Plaza hope to inspire diners with the exotic tastes of the Orient while also promoting a health-conscious spin.

They appear to have succeeded.  All one has to do is taste the delicious creations of the restaurant’s head chef, known simply as Mr. Ben.

Mr. Ben has 40 years of experience. It’s obvious he knows what he’s doing after sampling his tasty dishes.

The smartly decorated eatery  — the first of its kind in the world — opened May 8 in accordance with tradition. The number eight has long been regarded in Chinese culture as the luckiest number.

Fitting with the restaurant’s name, most of the dishes are stir-fried in a wok. 

The eatery’s mantra is a “new generation of healthy food.” This means low sodium, low starch, low oil, and, of course, no MSG.

If you have a chance to drop by — the restaurant is located at 1459 East H St., across from the Southwestern College football stadium — try the exquisite chicken with orange peel (not to be confused with orange chicken). The breast meat is lightly fried, cooked in a sweet, spicy and tangy sauce.

The menu is surprisingly extensive given the shop’s somewhat modest size. Diners can find appetizers, soups, complete dinners, seafood dishes, chicken dishes, beef dishes, pork dishes, wok specialties, teriyaki bowls, vegetarian dishes and gluten-free dishes.

Prices range from $2.49 to $12.95. Lunch specials are $5.99 or $6.99 and run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Catering is available. Call 421-5464 for information.


Bonita Museum hosting Coast to Corral cowboy art show through July 20
The Bonita Museum is currently hosting a special exhibit, Coast to Corral: A Modern View of the American West curated by Mehl Lawson, featuring cowboy art from some of the best and most respected artists of this genre in the United States.

The show runs through July 20. Times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Cost is $5 per adult, $4 for military and seniors. Children are free with one paying adult.
