January is National Hot Tea Month; had a cup today?

January is National Hot Tea Month. Have you had your cup of hot tea today?

Janet Goff, owner of My Cup of Tea (242 Third Ave., Chula Vista) offers a selection of more than 100 teas in her quaint downtown shop. She said people tend to drink heavier teas during wintertime and something lighter to make ice tea in summertime.

Black and green teas are popular selections for wintertime whereas herbal and rooibos caffeine-free teas are popular in summertime.

She said dedicated tea drinkers like to drink different types of tea throughout the day, especially those teas that have fruit in them.

Teas have less caffeine than coffee, which makes them a perfect bedtime choice. Coffee has about 100 mg of caffeine per 8 oz. serving whereas black tea has 40 mg of caffeine, green tea has 30 mg of caffeine and white tea has 15 to 30 mg of caffeine.

Goff sells teas by the ounce or pound. Tea bags are also available. One ounce of tea makes about eight cups.
