Singing seniors

The Singin’ Seniors of Norman Park Senior Center are looking to expand their 10-member ensemble.

The musically inclined elders over the age of 55 travel to three local senior homes once a month to belt out tunes from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s.

Each month, Singin’ Seniors serenade the folks at Canterbury Court Senior Apartments in Chula Vista, Friendship Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in National City and an Alzheimer’s care facility in Chula Vista.

The group has been harmonizing at Chula Vista’s Norman Park Senior Center for more than 10 years. However, a person does not have to be a member of the senior center to be part of the group, group leader Bobbie Lane said.

Lane, 71, a retired Southwestern College administrator, said no auditions or professional  skills are required to join the group.

“We are very accepting of everyone’s singing endeavor because we are all at different (skill) levels,” Lane said.

“The audience just loves us,” she said. “I think we love it more than they enjoy it.”

The group, equipped with a pianist, sings a new set of songs every month, ranging from Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” to Elvis Presley’s “Spanish Eyes.”

Lane said the group sings collectively and each member has a solo piece.

To join the group, Lane said people should attend a rehearsal on Tuesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Norman Park Senior Center, located at 270 F St.

Those interested in joining must be 55 years or older.
