Port looking for public input

Volunteers are needed to serve on a committee to help with the designing process of the Bayfront Master Plan.

“This is pretty much going to be a committee that will have a say in the design process,” said Port of San Diego spokeswoman Tanya Castaneda. “The committee will work to come up with the design guidelines, and a developer has to follow those guidelines.”

Chula Vista’s Bayfront Master Plan is a multimillion-dollar project that will transform the 500-acre bayfront into a world-class resort with restaurants, condos, parks and a nature preserve.

Castaneda described the project as a “utopia.”

She said by having the Port of San Diego form the Bayfront Cultural and Design Committee, the project truly becomes a community project.

“There are a lot of people in Chula Vista who really care about the future of the bayfront,” Castaneda said. “A lot of people want a voice. It is their bayfront.”

However, not just anyone can serve on the committee.

Castaneda said prospective volunteers must submit an application and provide a résumé with three references.

A requirement, Castaneda said, is that volunteers will have to demonstrate some knowledge with architectural landscaping designs.

“We are looking for people who really care about the Chula Vista bayfront and have the ability to make the bayfront a vital part of the community,” she said.

Castaneda said volunteers can serve two consecutive three-year terms. She also said volunteers will need to be available during the nights when the committee meets.

Castaneda said the committee will present design plans to the Port, and the Port will approve those plans or make recommendations.

The Port’s Bayfront and Cultural Design Committee needs 11 volunteers in the following areas: city of Chula Vista Planning Commission, Chula Vista Design Review Committee, Chula Vista Resource Conservation Committee, a Design Professional Architect, a Design Professional Landscape Architect, Design Professional Urban Design, two volunteers in the Business Equity, two Community Organization and the South Bay Wildlife Advisory Group.
