McCann claims he was almost run over

Sweetwater Union High School District board President John McCann called the police Tuesday night at Miguel’s Cocina restaurant in Eastlake and said one of his critics tried to run him over with a Ford F-250 truck.

“This is a guy that tried to run me down with his truck,” McCann said about Kevin O’Neill, who had been dining at that same restaurant.

McCann, a Chula Vista City Council hopeful, accompanied Sweetwater Superintendent Dr. Tim Glover to the Mexican eatery to discuss Thursday’s school board agenda, said Manny Rubio, a district spokesman.

O’Neill said at one point he noticed McCann leave the dinner table, so he went up to Glover to say hello before leaving.

O’Neill claims he never tried to run McCann over in the parking lot.

“I did not follow him out of the restaurant, I did not know where he was. I had seen him in the restaurant,” he said.

“And I did not at any time try to run him down or aim my car at him.”

He said McCann was the one to follow him upon his exit.

O’Neill said McCann appeared to be on his phone in the parking lot and as O’Neill was leaving the lot he wanted to remind McCann that Glover didn’t come to eat alone.

“I yelled out the window, ‘Hey, John, you’ve left (superintendent) Glover sitting in the restaurant,’ and continued driving on. I didn’t taunt him or anything,” O’Neill said.

“So the next thing, I hear banging on the back of my truck and I look in the rearview mirror and John is chasing me, banging on the truck, flipping me off.”

O’Neill said he then thought McCann wanted to speak with him so, as he was on Eastlake Parkway, he made a U-turn to meet McCann.

O’Neill said he asked McCann if he wanted to talk; then O’Neill said McCann went on a profanity-laced tirade and threatened to call the police on him.

O’Neill said he then left the scene.

According to the Chula Vista Police Department, McCann called the police and upon their arrival he declined to file a police report.

Chula Vista Police Capt. Roxanna Kennedy said because there was no crime committed, there is not an open investigation.

Rubio said Glover was unaware of the situation as he continued to eat his food alone.

Rubio said when Glover left the restaurant, McCann’s vehicle was no longer in the parking lot; it was originally parked next to Glover’s car.

Rubio said Glover left before the police arrived.
