Coked driver faces December sentence

A parolee will be sentenced Dec. 5 after a jury convicted him of vehicular manslaughter while under the influence of cocaine, which resulted in the death of an 89-year-old man who was walking on a National City sidewalk.

The jury deliberated only four hours before they convicted Kevin Earl Moore, 57, last month in the incident that killed Tomas M. Mondares on Jan. 20. Mondares suffered a broken neck and skull injuries after being dragged about 50 feet by Moore’s car.

Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Dwayne Moring set sentencing for Dec. 5 and Moore remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.

Mondares was struck on East Eighth Street and E Avenue after Moore’s vehicle jumped the curb and hit him.
Paramedics performed CPR on Mondares but he died at the scene. His family members attended the trial which ended last month.

Deputy District Attorney Victor Ou said Moore faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
Moore went to prison on a drug conviction in 2008. The other offenses occurred in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He was paroled only a few weeks before the fatality.

Moore stopped about a block away and waited for police, who arrested him. His damaged vehicle was seized. Moore did not testify in his trial and his attorney did not present any defense witnesses. The jury convicted him after re-hearing testimony from a prosecution witness at their request.
