Wonder of the wild expresses dynamic of watercolor for Eastlake artist Phillip Brents | Fri, Dec 07 2012 12:56 PM

Eastlake artist Beverly Berwick loves the medium of expression that watercolor uniquely presents. The local artist received three People’s Choice awards for her work in exhibitions in November and December.

Eight of her paintings are currently on display at the Mission Trails Regional Park Gallery through Dec. 21 and another is on display through the end of the month at the San Diego Watercolor Society Gallery.

Ten of her paintings have been on display at Gallery 4311 as part of the San Diego Hospice Gallery.

Berwick prefers painting animals and that fits in perfectly with the theme of the Mission Trails gallery’s current showing titled “The Wonder of the Wild by Seven Artists.”

Berwick’s subjects in the Mission Trails gallery exhibition include a raccoon, herd of elephants, sea turtle, frog, flamingo, serval, dog and lion cub.

“I prefer painting animals to people or landscapes because they speak to you,” said Berwick, who has been painting for three years. “There’s a dynamic, interactive experience of painting in watercolor, and it continues when you paint animals because they look back at you.”

The Mission Trails Regional Park Gallery is located at One Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego.

The San Diego Watercolor Society Gallery is located at 2825 Dewey Road, Studio 105, San Diego.

The San Diego Hospice Gallery is located at 4311 Third Ave., San Diego.

More images of Berwick’s work can be found at the Allied Artists Association webpage located at www.aaasd.net.

Chula Vista’s intimate community theater is presenting “Persuasion,” based on the book by Jane Austen, through Dec. 22. Austen’s most romantic novel is adapted by Jon Jory, one of the best known living American playwrights. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. The theater is located at 291 Third Ave., in downtown Chula Vista.
