Palm Springs Film Festival opens door to awards season

Springs International Film Festival where, from Jan. 1-11, nearly 200 films are being presented, including world premieres, U.S. premieres and various indie and foreign movies. Many of the films are receiving Oscar awards buzz.

One of the highlights for Ron Becijos (photographer and spouse) and me was the Awards Gala, held Jan. 2. The Palm Springs festival presented awards to the actors and directors who created the major movies of 2015. The event is a precursor to later award shows.

Lining up for hours is a key element of squeezing near enough to view the big stars as they arrive to the event. Although I had a momentary panic attack when hundreds pressed me against the fence at Johnny Depp’s appearance, it was still worth seeing stars cross the street and personally greet their fans. Matt Damon (“The Martian”) grinned like a kid. Young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) made her way down the rows.

The most high-spirited of the group was Brian Cranston (“Trumbo”), so widely known for his TV show “Breaking Bad.” Cranston cruised down the full front row of fans, high-fiving and posing for photos.

The wildest fan response came at the end of the red carpet event as Depp (“Black Mass”) crossed over to greet his fans. He was gracious to everyone and seemed to enjoy himself. Other stars who appeared at the red carpet event were Cate Blanchett (“Carol”), Brie Larson (“Room”) and Alicia Vikander (“Ex-Machina” and “The Danish Girl”).

Viewing the foreign films is a great opportunity for cinema fans, as most films presented at the festival never make it to San Diego’s big screens. “Tanna,” an Australian film, was an amazing view of native life on the island of Vanuatu as a tale of star-crossed lovers was told. Another film, “The Carer,” is a Hungarian-produced film about an actor (Brian Cox) and his young female caregiver. I congratulated actor Brian Cox, who saw the film with the audience and was reeling with pleasure at the film’s response.

Monday Jan. 11, is the day that audience favorites are reshown. For more information, go to
