Magic of Disney to touch South County CYT stage in February

South County Christian Youth Theater will present “Disney’s Mulan Jr.” in February at the Mater Dei Catholic High School performing arts center, 1615 Mater Dei Drive, Chula Vista. Show dates are Feb. 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 2 p.m.

Defying the village matchmaker, Mulan takes up arms disguised as a boy in order to spare her father from having to serve in the army. The Huns have invaded, and it is up to the misfit Mulan and her mischievous sidekick Mushu to save the emperor.

“Disney’s Mulan Jr.” is a heartwarming celebration of culture, honor, and the fighting spirit. The show allows for a large ensemble of actors playing soldiers, family members and brides-to-be. The score includes favorites like “Reflection,” “Honor to Us All” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” as well as new songs that will have the audience up on its feet.

The South County CYT artistic team includes co-directors Cody Combes and Kat Sorenson, choreographer Brittany Vörös Hopkins and musical director Tony Powers.

Songs also include “Written in Stone,” “Bride Practice,” “Keep ’Em Guessin’” and “A Girl Worth Fighting For.”

Main cast members include Mary Roe Gonzales as Mulan, Eddie Atienza as Mushu and John Albright as Shang.

CYT is an after-school theater arts training program for students ages 4 to 18. The program is dedicated to developing character in children and adults through training in the arts and by producing wholesome family entertainment, all of which reflect Judeo-Christian values. Since its founding in 1981, CYT has grown to be the largest youth theater program in the nation with 24 affiliates across the country.
