Get ready to fall in love under the sea — again — as “Disney’s Little Mermaid” comes to the stage for the first time in Chula Vista. South County Christian Youth Theater’s production runs May 16 to 18 and May 23 to 25 at the Mater Dei Catholic High School performing arts theater.

The CYT production brings Ariel, her handsome Prince Eric, rambunctious crustacean Sebastian, and all the favorite characters and beloved songs for a magical onstage experience. Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production, the CYT production’s featured songs include “Part of Your World,” “She’s in Love” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.”
“Disney’s Little Mermaid” comes to life under the direction of Erin Kelly, a Chula Vista resident. Her artistic team includes assistant director Lauren Gray, an Otay Ranch High School and CYT alumna; music director Janie d’Avignon, who recently served as music director for “Shrek the Musical;” choreographers Heidi Sugawa and Katherine Sahagun; and assistant choreographer Jazmine Ruiz, a Mater Dei Catholic High School and CYT alumna.
Francine Maigue, a Chula Vista High School alumna, joins as the show’s guest choreographer. Together, the team has managed to produce a musical full of brilliant songs, great dancing and breathtaking costumes and scenery.
The role of Ariel is played by 16-year-old Ivanna Quinceno of Mater Dei Catholic High School. Dania Cisneros, also 16, from Chula Vista High School, plays the villainous Ursula. John Albright, 17, of Santana High School, plays the charming Prince Eric. Loren Fernandez, 18, of San Diego State University, is the sidekick Jamaican crab Sebastian, and Liam Galleher, 13, of Hilltop Middle School, plays Ariel’s panicky friend Flounder.
Rounding out the cast of under the sea characters are Joshua Powers, 16, of Lutheran High School, as King Triton; Corwin Batchman, 15, of Chula Vista High School, as Scuttle; and David Batchman, 16, of Chula Vista High School, as Grimsby.
Ariel’s sisters are played by Rachel Herrera, 13, of Eastlake Middle School, as Aquata; Madelin Chavez, 16, of Otay Ranch High School, as Andrina; Vanessa Orozco, 15, of Otay Ranch High School, as Arista; Claire Trickey, 15, of Eastlake High, as Atina; Mia Apalategui, 15, of Bonita Vista High School, as Adella; Amy Wawryznski, 17, of San Diego SCPA, as Allana.
Ursula’s sea minions Flotsam and Jetsam are played by Thalia Rose Maigue-Bendorf, 14, of Bonita Vista High School, and Amber Ki, 17, of Del Norte High School. Carlotta is played by Ariella Kvashny, 14, of Olympian High School.

Chula Vista’s community theater company is presenting “9 to 5: The Musical” May 9 to June 7. The production is based on the 20th Century Fox motion picture, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. The OnStage production is directed by Raylene J. Wall, with musical direction from Kirk Valles and choreography by Alisa Williams. The musical is produced by Betsy Keller and Sue Roos. Venga Venga sets guacamole festival through June 15
Venga Venga Cantina and Tequila Bar in Otay Ranch Town Center is introducing the restaurant’s Guacamole Festival in celebration of the staple Mexican dish’s many regional preparations. Executive chef Richard Sandoval has crafted five guacamole dishes to represent his favorite Mexican selections.
Each guacamole will be available for tableside preparation through June 15.
The guacamoles include:
•Yucatan: shrimp ceviche, spicy habanero salsa, orange juice, lime juice and sea salt.
•Baja: kiwi, strawberry, mango, mint, jicama and chile arbol, lime juice and sea salt.
•Norteno: chicharron, pickled onion, salsa fresca, fresh lime juice and sea salt.
•Sur: grasshoppers, tomatillo, cotija cheese, onion and chile cascabel. (Yes, that's right — grasshoppers!)
•Pacifico: grilled beet, roasted walnut, queso fresco and citrus-chipotle salt.
