Back to the movies: ‘Jungle Book’ leads latest crop of offerings

Back to the movies for a review of the latest offerings:

 “Jungle Book”

My top pick of the month is this visually amazing Disney movie, filmed with motion capture and CGI (computer-generated imagery that creates the feel of a real world.

The young man cub Mowgli is a young boy raised by wolves in the jungle. The boy travels through the jungle, accompanied by his animal friends and is threatened by the tiger Shere Khan and a giant orangutan.

The young boy is played by American actor Neel Sethi, who is captivating in his role. The animal characters are voiced by a cast of actors with claim to Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and awards, including Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o and Scarlett Johansson.

Although you’ll want to take children with you, don’t feel that it’s required to have a kid in tow to see this PG film.

The director Jon Favreau, a fan of the 1967 animated Disney movie, pays homage to that classic. Grade: A

“Hello, My Name is Doris”

In this comedy/drama, Sally Field plays an older employee, Doris, who develops a crush on a younger man who is new to the company. I laughed out loud several times during the film. There are also touching moments as more of Doris’s life is revealed.

I’m guessing it’s more of a women’s film (as least judging by the audience). I’m hoping that Field will be remembered at next year’s Oscars for her endearing and quirky characterization of Doris.  Grade: B+

Other mentions:

“Purple Rain”

In honor of the passing of rock icon Prince, theaters are showing Prince’s film from 1984. With similarities to his own life, the film showcases Prince’s talent along with backstage drama. The “Purple Rain” soundtrack won an Academy Award for best original song.

“Criminal”

Kevin Costner plays a violent criminal who is implanted with memories of a recently killed CIA agent. There’s lots of action along with the edge that Costner brings to a film. Grade: B-
